Despite the storm causing a delay to the ceremony, Lionel Messi just had an impressive debut with the Inter Miami FC (USA), owned by David Beckham.
Thousands of fans braved the rain and storm to come to DRV PNK Stadium to welcome their idol, Lionel Messi – the most expensive signing in the history of Major League Soccer (MLS).
Speaking warmly in Spanish, Messi said: “First of all, I want to thank the people of Miami for this warm welcome. I am very happy to be here, among you all.”
I want to thank David Beckham and Jorge Mas. They have made everything easier for us since we arrived in Miami. I’m eager to start training and playing, to win and help the club grow.
I am personally delighted to have chosen this city and project with my family. I’m confident we’ll have a great time together. Thank you for everything!”
Unable to hide his emotions, co-owner of Inter Miami FC and former football legend, David Beckham, said: “Leo, we are very proud that you have chosen Inter Miami for the next phase of your career.
Welcome to the new family… We are also thrilled and proud to welcome Sergio Busquets – one of the most versatile midfielders of his generation.
We are building something special in Miami, a club that cares about the community it serves. Together, we will create unforgettable memories.
Like every fan, I am eagerly looking forward to seeing Leo on the field wearing the Inter Miami jersey. The next chapter of our story begins from here.”
Prior to this, Messi turned down an enticing offer from Saudi Arabia to sign a contract of 2.5 years with Inter Miami.
In the United States, Messi will receive a staggering 60 million USD per year. Sportswear giant Adidas, along with Apple, will support David Beckham’s team in paying the salary of the Argentine star.
